Explore Marine Protected Area Maps with Surfrider

Decades of overfishing, coastal development, and pollution have taken a toll on Southern California's ocean environment. To help improve our ocean's health, the State is setting aside protected zones similar to state parks so that marine life can thrive.

After a year of 'map-making' and planning, the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process is in the home stretch. Local stakeholders are putting final touches on the maps and will come up with three different proposals. The three proposals will ultimately be forwarded to the Fish and Game Commission where they will vote on one map they think will work best for southern California.

This is one of your last chances to give meaningful input on where marine protected areas should be located! Please join Surfrider to learn more about the Marine Life Protection Act and to discuss the proposed maps. After the community forums, will compile all constructive comments into a letter that will be sent to decision makers before the final vote. We need to hear from you!

About the Marine Life Protection Act

The MLPA is a law that requires the state to establish a "network" of marine protected areas from Oregon to the Mexican border. The goals of the MLPA are to: 'set aside' areas of the ocean to increase fish populations, enhance marine habitat, and to improve recreational and educational opportunities. Over the past year, has been working with diverse groups of people including recreationalists, fishermen, environmentalists, and Chapter activists to ensure the law is effectively implemented. Plan A Free Beach Wedding In Southern California?

This from the "Who Knew" file! As long as your group is 20 people or less, you can get married as early as 4:00 am on the San Clemente beach, free of charge! The city does ask for some paperwork, primarily to advise Marine Safety about the activity and so that wedding-goers understand some of the challenges a beach wedding poses: long walks for guests, walking in the sand in dress shoes, weather and wind conditions which can cause it to be cold, sand to blow, and dresses to billow, noise from trains and pounding surf that might make it difficult for guests to hear your vows. September-March are considered best times, since beaches are least crowded. The San Clemente Pier is also an option for a wedding. Laura Barnett in BP&R highly recommends some of San Clemente's ocean-view parks Contact her directly (949)361-8264 to learn how to get permits for park use and also to see what's available for groups larger than 20. As for getting married at City Hall, OC City Clerks, such as our wonderful Joanne Baade, cannot perform civil wedding ceremonies. Joanne advises you to contact the Orange County Clerk Recorder www.ocrecorder.com for info on civil weddings and how to get that oh-so-important marriage license. -Lori

Come be a part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year!

In 2008 more than 70,000 volunteers across California collected more than 1,600,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways.

Help us do our part in San Clemente.

This year’s event will be held on September 19th at the San Clemente pier from 9am-12noon.
